In the week of 7th until 11th of November the exhibition telling about what happens to a person with a disability when their human rights are taken away by putting them under guardianship, became part of the efforts of Peru to introduce standards of equality before the law under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
The exhibition texts of
"I decide=I am" were translated in Spanish, proving once again that art is the best way to tear down barriers and give voice to unheard stories. The exhibition was supported by congressmen Marisa Main and Alberto de Belaúnde who attended the opening event.
One of the objectives of the opening of the exhibition at the Congress was to give voice to the debate in Peru for the reform of the Civil Code aimed at ensuring the legal capacity of persons with disabilities.
The opening event was attended by members of Congress and representatives of various groups that have a role in the reform. It is expected that the exhibition will be moved to a gallery, thus reaching a wider audience. Organizers of the visit of the exhibition in Peru is "Life and Disability Organization - SODIS", which is a nonprofit organization with a vision to achieve an inclusive society, where the rights of people with disabilities are fully guaranteed, their equal opportunities are encouraged and all forms of discrimination eliminated.
