“On a tour” in Africa

18 May 2017

The exhibition "I decide = I am", resolute and tireless, continues to travel the wider world to share its modest but purely human messages and touch the hearts of thousands, and even millions of people on the planet, regardless of their race, nationality, religion. People, for whom the recognition of human dignity, freedom of person and equality before the law are of the highest value. Yet it is still a struggle to achieve that, not only in Bulgaria but in countries both close and distant.

After Ireland, Kazakhstan, Switzerland and Peru, this time the exhibition is even more daring in its travel plans because it is determined to jump over the Equator for a second time to reach its new even farther horizon- the Republic of South Africa. From there, the African tour of the “I decide = I am” message begins. At the beginning of June 2017 the paintings, depicting the personal fates of people with disabilities, locked in the jail of their imposed prohibition, will visit the office of the South African Human Rights Commission. From there, the African tour of the message "I decide = I am" begins. At the beginning of June 2017, paintings stating the personal fates of people with disabilities locked in the prison of their assigned interdiction, will be visited at the office of the South African Human Rights Commission. The Commission is a national institution created to support constitutional democracy. It seeks to promote respect, observance and protection of human rights for all citizens without fear or patronage.

Alice, Thomas, Ivan and the other emblematic characters from the exhibition, painted in color by artist Nadezhda Georgieva-Nad,  and depicted in words by Yana Buurer Tavanie, were also invited to visit the Pan-African Parliament. The Parliament is established as an African Union body whose purpose is to ensure the full participation of African peoples in the development and economic integration of the continent. Among the main objectives of the Pan-African Parliament is the promotion of the implementation of the principle of human rights and democracy in Africa.

The next participation of the exhibition at an official event in Africa will be at the 5th Annual African Conference on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which will be held on 7-8 November 2017 at the Center for Human Rights, Preton University in South Africa. With their presence, the paintings will “share” the Bulgarian experience for the rejection of morally obsolete norms of prohibition and for introducing a better and equal model to help people with disabilities make important decisions for themselves, as set out in the draft Law on Physical Persons and Support Measures. At this year, the topics of the forum will be devoted to the consequences of the adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (the Convention) for the African region, with a special focus on Art. 13 - Right of access to justice and Art. 12 - equal treatment before the law. In the frameworks of this year's conference the opportunities for development of mechanisms and strategies for effective adaptation and implementation of Art. 12 and Art. 13 of the Convention will be discussed, as well as the interaction between these two provisions.

The exhibition “I decide =  I am” was established  through  the  initiative of  Bulgarian Center for Not-for-profit Law (BCNL) in partnership with “Maria’s World Fondation” , The Bulgarian Association for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (BAPID) and the Global Initiative  on  Psychiatry (GIP) - Sofia, within the framework of  the "Next Step" Program. The author of the exhibition is Nadezhda Georgieva (Nad) and the lyrics were created by Yana Buhrer Tavanie.
